A very interesting novel which describes life in wartime Berlin for ordinary people. The central story is about a middle aged factory worker, who finally loses patience and stages a very personal but ultimately futile resistance to the Nazi regime.
I found a great contrast between the first half of the book, where the main characters’ personalities seem choked and closed in by the oppressive effects of just living in that time and place, and the latter sections, which take place in prison. Here, the characters are portrayed as being in chains, but free. They experience real growth as they await their inevitable fates.
