Book 16 – Ned Only by Barbara Willard

Dipping into a bag of books acquired from my elderly aunt, I pulled out Ned Only. I was an avid reader of the Mantlemass novels as a girl so decided to give this one a go.

Set in Restoration England, it does quite a decent job of describing the social turmoil of those years in a way that might make sense to young readers, but I found the characterisation pretty drab and cliched; a bad master, his beautiful ward, the kind tutor and the ragamuffin turnspit with no friend in the world. And the plot rambled a bit.
