Book 4 – Crossing to Safety by Wallace Stegner

A reflective novel; tracing the lives and long term friendship between two American couples in the mid Twentieth Century. It’s written from the perspective of one of the husbands and a main theme is marriage and mutual dependence.  I found it a tad intense at times, very much so in the final scenes as one of the characters is on the point of death. And I was slightly puzzled by the variable attention given to the characters, particularly Sally who was given a rather two-dimensional description, in comparison to the others.

Plot 6/10

Characters 8/10

Readability 7/10

Laughs 3/10

Read again? I doubt it.

A relatively quick read coming up this week; The Chequer Board by Nevil Shute
